The calculator is based on the standard assumption that ovulation occurs 14 days before the next period (the luteal phase). For individuals with very regular cycles, timing can still differ from the estimate. What is the fertile window?
The fertile window is the approximately 7-day span each cycle during which unprotected intercourse can result in pregnancy. It spans the 5 days before ovulation (because sperm can survive up to 5 days in cervical mucus), ovulation day itself, and 1 day after. The day before and the day of ovulation carry the highest individual-day probability.
What is the luteal phase?
The luteal phase is the second half of the menstrual cycle, beginning immediately after ovulation and ending with the start of the next period. During this phase, the ruptured follicle forms the corpus luteum and secretes progesterone to prepare the uterine lining for potential implantation. The luteal phase is relatively constant at 12–16 days (typically 14 days) regardless of total cycle length.
