How PDF Compressor & Resizer works
The PDF Compressor creates an image-based PDF copy using local page rendering. It can be useful for reducing large scan-based documents, but it is not a lossless optimizer for every PDF. Each page is rendered to a canvas, encoded as JPEG and placed into a new document. A source that is already compact, especially a text-only file, can become larger instead of smaller.
The presets change canvas scale and JPEG quality. Higher settings retain more visual detail while typically consuming more output bytes. Lower settings can soften small type, fine lines and diagrams. The current scales are 1, 1.5 and 2 relative to the PDF page viewport; do not interpret approximate DPI labels as a measured print-quality guarantee. The file stays on your device during rendering, although the site and its rendering assets require a connection.
Because the new pages contain raster images, original selectable text, interactive form fields, links and cryptographic signatures are not preserved as those original document objects. Use this workflow only when a visual copy meets the destination’s needs. Retain the original for searching, editing, signature verification or accessibility requirements. Review both the saved file size and page appearance before using the result for an important submission.
How to use PDF Compressor & Resizer
1. Open the original PDF
Choose the document and check its original byte size. Keep a separate source copy, especially if it contains interactive fields or signatures. Password protection, damaged data or unsupported PDF features may prevent local rendering.
2. Choose a visual quality preset
Start with the middle preset, then use a lower setting only if its visual result is acceptable. For a scan with fine text, compare a detailed page rather than judging only the cover or a thumbnail.
3. Render and compare
Run compression and allow all pages to finish. Compare the reported output size with the original. There is no fixed savings percentage or guaranteed attachment-size target; image content and source encoding determine the outcome.
4. Inspect the downloaded document
Open the result in a PDF viewer, verify the page count and zoom into small text. Check whether the destination requires searchable text or accessible document structure. If so, this rasterized copy may not be a suitable replacement.

PDF.js renders page appearance and pdf-lib places the resulting JPEGs in a new PDF. This is visual reconstruction, not selective optimization of the original text and vector objects.

Canvas scale and JPEG quality affect detail and output size. Different documents respond differently, so compare actual results instead of relying on a universal reduction estimate.

Review original and resulting bytes before choosing what to share. A larger output is possible; the source file is still available and has not been overwritten by the browser tool.
Compression savings depend on the source PDF
A document dominated by large page images offers different opportunities from a compact text-only PDF. Strong raster compression can soften fine text and affect searchable content. Compare actual output bytes and inspect a detailed page before replacing the original; smaller size is useful only if the result still serves its purpose.
Sharing noninteractive scans
Try a compact visual copy of a scanned handout where the recipient does not need editable fields or selectable text. Check that handwriting and small labels remain legible.
Preparing preview documents
Create a lighter review copy when visual page appearance is the main requirement. Distribute the original separately when reviewers need its full document features.
Frequently asked questions
Will the compressed PDF retain searchable text?
The rebuilt pages are JPEG images, so the original text layer is not retained. OCR would be a separate step and would need proofreading. Keep the original for reliable text extraction.
Can you guarantee a PDF smaller than 2 MB?
No. Page count, visual complexity, scale and encoding quality determine output size. Remove unnecessary pages or use another workflow if the available settings cannot meet a strict upload limit.
Are digital signatures preserved?
No. A visible signature image may remain in the page picture, but that is not preservation of the original cryptographic signature or its validity. Retain the signed original for verification.
Does local processing guarantee regulatory compliance?
No. Avoiding document uploads is one architectural property, not a compliance certification. Your organization must assess the device, browser, document handling, retention and applicable requirements.
Why does compression sometimes increase the size?
Text and vector instructions can occupy fewer bytes than full-page images. Replacing compact objects with JPEG pages can increase storage even when the new file looks similar.
Do I need an internet connection, and are my inputs uploaded?
An internet connection is required to open tools and refresh a temporary session. Processing stays on your device; the handshake sends a random challenge, not files or text inputs. Libraries, fonts or models may download. Local processing cannot remove risks from an untrusted device or extension.
